The race for the future leadership of Oyo State has taken a new dimension as the Oyo Heritage Assembly, a socio-political pressure group, has declared that the next Governor must emerge from the Oyo Zone.
In a compelling statement issued on Thursday, jointly signed by Sunday Elegbede and Daud Temitope, the group argued that the zone—despite its historical weight as the bedrock of Yoruba civilization—has yet to produce a governor since the creation of the state.
A Call for Equity
The group hinged its demand on the principles of inclusion and balanced leadership. They noted that while Oyo State continues to evolve, the political equation remains unbalanced against Oyo Town.
“Oyo Town is not just another community; it is the home of the Alaafin and a symbol of Yoruba identity,” the statement read. “Yet, despite this legacy, it remains politically marginalized in the governorship of the state. Fair representation fosters unity, trust, and a sense of belonging.”
Bridging the Infrastructure Gap
Beyond sentiment, the group pointed to the urgent need for infrastructural development. They argued that a governor from the zone would possess the unique grassroots understanding required to address the deficits in the area.
“Oyo town still lacks major infrastructure,” the group noted. “A governor from the area would prioritize road networks, healthcare, education, and job creation. Leadership from the grassroots ensures that the people’s needs are not just heard, but met.”
Capacity and Competence
Pushing back against any notion that the zone lacks capable hands, the Assembly emphasized that Oyo Town boasts a surplus of administrators, technocrats, and professionals ready to lead.
“There are qualified sons and daughters of Oyo town with the integrity and capacity required to steer the affairs of the state in the right direction,” they stated. “This is not about favoritism—it’s a call for justice. It is not just about geography, but values.”
The Verdict
Concluding their message, the Oyo Heritage Assembly called on political stakeholders across the state to respect the zoning arrangement for the sake of justice.
“An Oyo town indigene as governor would bring heritage, fairness, energy, and vision. Oyo Town is ready. Oyo State is ready. The time is now.”
